My Fasting Journals – Discover Spiritual or Physical Symptoms?

My fasting journals expose more than just spiritual and physical symptoms!

Reviewing my fasting journals over the last 2 decades, it doesn’t take long to discover you cannot separate the spiritual and physical. Nor can you put aside your emotions. Well, I guess you could if you chose to ignore them. But then you would be living in denial wouldn’t you?

My fasting journals are filled with my experiences of what happens physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. During my last fast I was asked this question by a friend.

“Kelly, are you fasting for spiritual reasons or physical?”

The Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Thessalonica… 5:23  May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God created us as a triune being – spirit, soul and body. When I am on a fast I keep that in mind and include these four basic ways into my fasting journals. Observing how these four intertwine –makes way for a “spirit, soul & body” experience that inevitably promotes healing to your whole being!

Four basic ways I journal and what takes place.

1. Physically – headaches will come. Vomiting, shakes, fever, muscle aches, dimming of vision, trouble sleeping or very intense dreams, etc – are all typical symptoms to a physical cleanse. Each fast builds upon the previous so headaches won’t last forever! Your body will cleanse deeper & deeper – if you give your body permission.

2. Mentally – your mind goes non-stop. Journaling your thoughts, conversations, ideas and attitudes puts your mind to rest and allows you to focus on what God is saying. Journaling your thoughts on paper will say a lot about oneself. The Holy Spirit almost always has something to say if we just stop and listen!

3. Emotionally – your emotions have a voice.  Are you listening? During a fast, feelings of overwhelming sadness, rejection, anger, irritability are triggered at any moment. Just the whiff of fried chicken, the sound of pancakes sizzling or even coming across an old family photo stirs long forgotten memories. At times I silence my emotions as if they don’t exist. God has had to gently remind me “Kelly when you ignore your emotions, you are ignoring a very part of how I created you!”

Your emotions are valid. Just as our bodies experience a physical healing during a fast, so do our emotions. Physical cleansing always precedes emotional healing. Your emotions have a voicewill you listen?

4. Spiritually…  you are awakened! God intends for us to be in health; spirit, soul and body. Redemption always involves the “whole man” as mentioned above I Thessalonians 5:23.

During your next fast, try journaling in these four basic areas – give way for a “spirit, soul & body ” experience that brings healing to your whole being!
