Part II – “Pain Must Be Embraced”

Painful past…
Embracing emotional pain can be very painful indeed. Besides, who in their right mind wants to do such a thing anyway?  Coming face to face with the pain of our past is a must if we truly desire freedom in our lives and the lives of those around us.

Yes it takes time, guts and courage to face the truth of our past.

By creating a safe place in our weekend “Encounters”… many are confronted with the pain of their past as my husband and I become very vulnerable and transparent sharing the pain from our own. We take others to that place in our hearts that once was filled with pain … which gives them permission to go to that place in theirs. We remind them that the pain coming out hurts just as bad as when it went in.

The good news? God’s love always comes… displacing that place of pain.

Love in – pain out

Let’s unpack this a bit more…
__________________________________________________

1. Describe pain

*Webster’s definition of pain is a bodily sensation that causes acute *discomfort or suffering.
*My definition…. “It just plain hurts!”

2. What do we do with pain?
*Bury it
*Medicate it
*Feed it! (Chocolate, ice cream, crispy cremes!)
*Deny it
*Ignore it
*Pass it on! (Hurt people - hurt people!)

 3. What are some false beliefs about pain?
*Out of sight – out of mind
*Time - will – heal
*It’s under the blood (which yes this is true…but keep in mind that the blood of Jesus cannot cover what we don’t       uncover! Ouch! )
* What’s in the past - stays in the past

4. How does pain manifest?
*Pain always seeks comfort
*Pain thrives in darkness (a breeding ground for more pain)
*Anger
*Self pity
*Promiscuity
*Pain builds walls

Now these lists are far from being exhaustive… so help me develop this teaching by sending in your experiences with pain!

_______________________________________

Bottom line- pain distorts our…
*personality
*quality of life
*responses to life
*ability to function in life

So how do we push through pain?

Stay tuned for Part III… ”Pain Must Be Comforted!”

Oh and just a little something to ponder on….

The price you are willing to pay for freedom today, will determine the level of freedom your children inherit tomorrow!
